Earthquake
In the event of an earthquake:
- Remain Calm. DO NOT leave the building, you are safer inside until the initial tremors subside.
- DO NOT use the elevators. If you are in an elevator, exit as soon as possible.
- Take cover under a desk or other sturdy object or against the wall in the core of the building and protect your head.
- Move away from the building exterior. Stay away from the windows, bookcases, filing cabinets and any objects that may fall or shatter.
- DO NOT take cover in emergency stairwells.
- Be prepared for aftershocks.
- Cooperate with the public safety officials who may be on the scene.
- CHECK for injured individuals and assist when you are able. Never move a seriously injured person unless they are in immediate danger.
- ASSESS the damage to property and check for fires. CHECK for electrical shorts and gas and water leaks.
- If you suspect a gas leak, DO NOT use matches, cigarette lighters or turn on electrical switches or appliances.
- If you smell gas, contact the Chief Engineer or Lobby desk immediately.
- Open doors carefully and beware of falling objects.
- Wear shoes for protection from debris and broken glass.
- Stay away from windows/glassed areas.
- Replace telephone receivers; this may be useful if you have phone service.
- Listen to the radio for emergency reports.
- Inform the Divisional Office of the situation.
